Monocure 3D Resin Settings for MSLA Printers

Quick Answer

Monocure 3D Rapid resins typically print at 2.0–3.5 second layer exposure on a 405nm MSLA printer. Start with the manufacturer's recommended settings for your printer, then adjust by ±0.5s based on results. Always calibrate with a test print before committing to a production job.

Monocure 3D is an Australian resin manufacturer whose Rapid series is widely used for professional MSLA printing. Getting consistent results requires starting from calibrated settings and understanding how exposure time affects the trade-off between detail resolution and structural integrity.

How MSLA Exposure Works

In masked stereolithography (MSLA) printing, an LCD panel masks a UV light source to expose each layer. The exposure time determines how deeply the UV light penetrates and cures the resin. Too little exposure produces weak, under-cured layers that may delaminate. Too much exposure bleeds into fine features, destroying small detail and producing over-sized holes and features.

Layer thickness and UV intensity both affect the required exposure time. Thinner layers (0.05mm) require slightly longer exposure per layer than thicker layers (0.1mm), and lower UV wattage printers require more time than higher output units.

Starting Settings for Monocure 3D Rapid Series

These settings are validated starting points. Printer-specific calibration is always required.

ParameterStandard Detail (0.05mm)Fast (0.1mm)
Normal layer exposure2.5–3.5s2.0–3.0s

Bottom exposure30–45s25–35s
Lift speed60–80 mm/min60–80 mm/min
Lift distance6–8mm5–7mm

These settings are indicative for a mid-range MSLA printer (6K or 8K panel, ~25–35W UV). High-power printers (>40W) will require shorter exposures. Calibrate with the manufacturer's exposure test file before starting production work.

Calibrating Your Specific Printer

The most reliable calibration method is the RERF (Resin Exposure Range Finder) test print. This produces a grid of identical features at incrementally different exposures in a single print, allowing you to identify the optimal exposure for your printer and resin combination visually.

Print the RERF at your starting exposure, then select the tile that shows:

  • Sharp, clean corners without rounded edges (over-exposure)
  • No delamination or separation between features (under-exposure)
  • Holes and slots at nominal dimensions (measure against the file)

Monocure 3D Rapid Colour Notes

Different colours of the same resin formulation can require slightly different exposure times due to pigment opacity. Black resins typically require slightly longer exposure than clear or light-coloured resins because the pigment absorbs UV. Grey is generally closest to neutral. Adjust by ±0.3–0.5s when switching colours within the same resin type.

Washing and Curing Monocure 3D Resins

Monocure 3D produces a dedicated washing solution (Monocure 3D Resin Cleaner) and recommends against IPA for some formulations due to swelling. Wash for 2–3 minutes in fresh solution, then air dry fully before UV curing. Cure under 405nm at the power level appropriate to the part size — larger parts require longer cure times to ensure full through-cure.

See the Resin Washing and Curing Guide for the complete workflow.
