Support Material Compatibility: What Works Against What
Use a dedicated support filament for clean, damage-free removal. Bambu Support for PLA/PETG, Bambu Support for ABS, Polymaker PolySupport, PVA for dissolvable, and HIPS for ABS/ASA. For engineering materials like Nylon and PC where no dedicated support exists, same-material supports with tuned interface settings are the fallback.
Support structures are unavoidable for most complex prints — overhangs, bridges, and internal cavities all need something to print against. The question is what material to use for those supports, and how cleanly it separates from the part material.
If you want clean, damage-free support removal, the answer is simple: use a dedicated support material. Same-material supports with a gap are a compromise — they leave marks, require cleanup, and risk damaging the part surface. Dedicated support filaments exist to solve this problem, and the results speak for themselves.
Dedicated Support Filaments — The Right Way
Bambu Lab Support Materials
Bambu Lab produces dedicated support filaments designed for their AMS multi-material system, though they work on any dual-extrusion printer:
Bambu Support for PLA/PETG
- Designed specifically for PLA and PETG parts
- Peels away cleanly with virtually no surface damage
- Leaves a smooth interface — often smoother than the rest of the part
- Print temperature: 190–220°C
- No dissolving required — purely mechanical peel-off separation
- Works with any printer that supports dual extrusion, not just Bambu machines
Bambu Support for PLA (New Edition)
- Optimised specifically for PLA — even cleaner separation than the PLA/PETG variant when used only with PLA
- Same effortless peel-off removal
Bambu Support for ABS
- Designed for ABS and higher-temperature styrene-based materials
- Print temperature: 230–260°C
- Enclosed chamber recommended for best results
- Clean separation from ABS where HIPS dissolving isn't practical
Bambu Support for PA/PET
- Designed for engineering Nylon and PET-based materials — PAHT-CF, PA6-CF, PET-CF, PA-GF, and similar
- This is significant because engineering Nylons have historically had no dedicated support option
- Clean peel-off separation from carbon fibre and glass fibre reinforced materials
- Enclosed chamber and hardened nozzle recommended
These are the support materials we'd recommend first for anyone running a Bambu printer with AMS. The peel-off results are consistently excellent — and the PA/PET variant finally solves the engineering material support problem that used to require same-material workarounds.
Polymaker PolySupport / PolyDissolve
PolySupport (Breakaway)
- Mechanical breakaway support for PLA and PETG
- Peels and snaps away with minimal force
- Print temperature: 190–210°C
- Less hygroscopic than PVA — easier to store
- Good option for non-Bambu dual-extrusion setups
PolyDissolve S1 (Water-Soluble)
- Dissolves in warm water — no mechanical removal needed
- Compatible with PLA, TPU, and PVA-compatible materials
- Print temperature: 190–210°C
- Better moisture resistance than generic PVA
PolyDissolve S2 (Water-Soluble, High Temp)
- Extended temperature range for Nylon and some engineering materials
- Print temperature: 220–250°C
- Dissolves in warm water with agitation
Ultimaker Breakaway
- Specifically engineered for Ultimaker dual-extrusion systems
- Clean mechanical separation from PLA, PETG, Nylon, and CPE
- Print temperature: 215–225°C
- Well-documented profiles in Ultimaker Cura
eSUN eBreak / eSUN ePVA+
eBreak (Breakaway)
- Budget-friendly breakaway support
- Compatible with PLA, PETG, ABS
- Print temperature: 200–230°C
ePVA+ (Water-Soluble)
- Improved PVA formulation with reduced moisture sensitivity
- Compatible with PLA and PETG
- Dissolves in water — 2–12 hours depending on temperature and agitation
Dissolvable Support Materials
PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol)
PVA dissolves completely in warm water. No mechanical removal, no surface damage, no picking at hard-to-reach support remnants with pliers.
Compatible with: PLA, PETG
Not compatible with: ABS, ASA, Nylon, PC (print temperatures too high — PVA degrades above ~220°C)
Practical notes:
- Dissolving takes 2–12 hours depending on water temperature, support volume, and agitation
- Warm water (40–60°C) with agitation (ultrasonic cleaner or stirring) dramatically speeds dissolving
- PVA is extremely hygroscopic — store sealed with desiccant and dry before printing (50°C for 4–6 hours)
- Print at 190–210°C with no cooling fan
- Wet PVA will clog your hotend — drying is not optional
Best for: Complex internal cavities and enclosed support structures that can't be reached mechanically.
HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
HIPS dissolves in d-limonene (a citrus-derived solvent). It's the dissolvable option for ABS and ASA.
Compatible with: ABS, ASA
Not compatible with: PLA, PETG
Practical notes:
- Dissolving in limonene takes 4–24 hours
- Limonene is flammable — use in a well-ventilated area
- HIPS prints at 230–240°C and behaves similarly to ABS
- Requires enclosed chamber
Best for: Complex ABS or ASA parts where internal supports need dissolving.
PLA as a Budget Support Option for PETG
If you don't have a dedicated support filament available, PLA works as a functional support for PETG parts. The two materials have naturally low inter-layer adhesion, so PLA supports snap away from PETG reasonably cleanly.
Settings:
- Support interface gap: 0.1–0.15mm
- PLA temperature: 200–210°C (lower end for weaker bond)
- PETG temperature: 230–240°C as normal
This is a usable workaround, but dedicated support materials like Bambu Support for PLA/PETG or PolySupport produce noticeably better results with less cleanup. If you're printing PETG regularly with supports, invest in a proper support filament — the difference in surface quality is significant.
Same-Material Supports — The Fallback
For engineering materials where no dedicated support exists — Nylon, Polycarbonate, PA6-CF, PPA-CF — same-material supports with a separation gap are the fallback option. This is not ideal, but it's often the only option at these temperature ranges.
Tips for cleaner same-material support removal:
- Interface Z gap: 0.15–0.2mm
- Interface density: 50–60%
- Interface pattern: grid or lines (not concentric)
- Support infill: 10–15% for easier break-away
- For Nylon, slightly higher flow rate at the interface can aid separation
Note: Bambu Support for PA/PET now provides dedicated support for engineering Nylons and PET-CF — a significant improvement over same-material workarounds. Polymaker PolyDissolve S2 is another option in this space. Check the latest compatibility data from these manufacturers before defaulting to same-material supports.

Our Recommendation
For PLA and PETG: Use Bambu Support for PLA/PETG, PolySupport, or an equivalent dedicated breakaway filament. The results are dramatically better than same-material supports or the PLA-for-PETG workaround. If you're doing any volume of dual-material printing, a roll of dedicated support filament pays for itself in saved cleanup time on the first few prints.
For dissolvable supports: PVA for PLA/PETG, HIPS for ABS/ASA. Budget for a dryer if using PVA.
For engineering materials (Nylon, PA6-CF, PET-CF): Bambu Support for PA/PET is the first dedicated support material that actually works with engineering Nylons and CF composites. If you're printing PA6-CF, PAHT-CF, PA-GF, or PET-CF with supports, this changes the game — no more same-material workarounds with interface gaps.
For PC and PPA-CF: Same-material supports with tuned interface settings remain the best option. Dedicated support compatibility at these temperatures is still limited.
In our production farm: P3DA runs dedicated support materials on all multi-material prints. The time saved on post-processing and the improvement in surface quality at support interfaces makes dedicated support filament the obvious choice for any professional workflow.
